Vairma/Herrera 2021 Teamster Power Slate Petition Drive 2020

Teamster Brothers & Sisters,

Thank you for coming to our campaign website and for your interest in helping us with our 2020 petition drive.  Your support of the Teamster Power Slate will help elect the wonderful, diverse group of leaders we have assembled on our team. We believe in a union that unites the membership to build Teamster Power through solidarity and diversity. The official election rules require we get 2.5% of our membership across our union to certify by petition that they want our slate accredited to be official candidates for the 2021 International Union elections. By helping us circulate these petitions you are helping us build a strong, grassroots campaign to take our message to our members and build Teamster Power!

You may download petitions for your region and a copy of the rules for petition circulators below. Please review the materials below and read them carefully. We really appreciate you taking the time to support the campaign.

In Solidarity,

Steve Vairma & Ron Herrera

Frequently Asked Questions

    1. Where to get petitions? – Petitions can be downloaded and copied from www.teamsterpowerslate.com/petitions. If you are having trouble downloading the petition please contact the campaign at petitions@teamsterpowerslate.com or call (720) 608-1106. Do not use union resources to download or copy petitions. Each region has a unique set of eligible candidates. Be sure to circulate the correct version for your region. If you do not know which region you are in, contact the campaign.
    2. How many signatures do we need to collect? – For the Vairma/Herrera 2021 Teamster Power Slate to become accredited we must gather signatures from 2.5% of the general International membership. To show the support and strength for the Teamster Power Slate we would like to gather significantly more signatures. Please gather as many signatures as possible in your area.
    3. Who Can Sign the Petitions? Any active member of the Teamsters Union may sign. This includes members of the BLET, BMWED and GCC. Retirees and Non-Members MAY NOT Sign.If you signed the petition in Summer 2020 you MAY sign again. We are adding three new candidates to the slate and your signature will accredit them – the other candidates are already accredited.
    4. What must be provided by the signer?– Active Teamster members must provide name, signature, Local Union and either the last four digits of their Social Security/SIN # OR their full, current mailing address. We are strongly encouraging members to use their last four of SSN/SIN# because it is much easier to verify their status as active members. Members can also choose to put a cellphone, which we strongly encourage circulators to be sure to mention if the member wants to receive future updates about the campaign, opportunities to volunteer or other important information.
    5. Who May Circulate Petitions?– Only active Teamster members in good standing may circulate the petition. The person circulating the petition must fill in the bottom certification box. You must fill in your Name and Local Union, provide the last four digits of your Social Security Number AND Full Mailing Address. Petitions are only valid if they are certified and the circulator fills in all the necessary information. We also ask Circulators to provide their cell numbers so we can contact them if there are any questions.
    6. Important information on the circulation of the petition - No Union or Employer resources may be used to circulate, copy, distribute, collect or return the completed petitions. This means you may not use Union or Employer provided computers, smart phones, e-mail, fax, mail privileges, etc., to send or receive petitions or petition related materials.
    7. Where do I send Completed Petitions?– Return as soon as possible or weekly to Vairma/Herrera 2021 Teamster Power Slate. The campaign must track progress towards our goals daily to ensure we are getting the necessary number of valid signatures. Do not forget to fill our circulator certification section at bottom. If possible, please organize by local union prior to returning a petition.

HELPFUL TIPS FOR CIRCULATORS

    1. Build Unity – Remember that this might be the first opportunity a member has to learn about the Teamster Power Slate. Speak positively about our slate and our shared values. Talk about leadership that unifies us all to build Teamster Power.
    2. Be Prepared with Materials and Supplies – Have copies of the regional version of your petitions, the circulator instructions, pens, flyers, clipboards, a small folding table, hand sanitizer/sanitizer wipes to make the process go smoothly.
    3. Work in Teams – You can cover more ground when you have a buddy helping you.
    4. Observe Required Social Distancing and Use Common Sense for Safety of Our Members– Each worksite and
community will be different, but be diligent to observe all rules related to social distancing, wear a mask, and clean your pens and other items members will touch as frequently as possible. Setting up a table or space for folks to sign at a safe distance is a thoughtful option too.
    5. Focus on Getting Last Four of SSN/SIN for ID Purposes – The election rules allow petition signers the option of putting the last for of their SSN/SIN# OR their full mailing address. The last 4 is much easier to ID the members and confirm they are a valid, active Teamster in good standing. If the signer simply does not want to share this info, then direct them to the full mailing address We want to encourage, but not argue this point. We cannot require members to provide the last four digits of their SSN/SIN#.
    6. Be Sure to Ask for a Personal Cell Phone if Possible – The petitions have an option for signers to share a personal cell phone. Pitch the importance of keeping up to date with campaign updates, info on delegate elections, conventions and future volunteer opportunities. We will send periodic messages but will not saturate members with messages.
    7. When in Doubt Ask the Campaign– Our contact info is below at the bottom of the page.

CAUTION FOR CIRCULATORS

    1. Circulating Petitions is A Volunteer Activity and Must Be done OFF-CLOCK – It is a violation for IBT official election rules and violating this reflects poorly on you and on the campaign. Do not do this.
    2. Use No Union Resources or Distribute Petitions Inside Union Halls – It is a violation for IBT official election rules. This means no petitions on union hall bulletin boards, campaign literature tables or sending petitions to individuals that work inside union halls or offices.
    3. Do Not Argue if A Member Declines to Sign – The Teamster Power Slate is about building member unity for a stronger, better future for the Teamsters. If you encounter a member who supports another slate or has a negative reaction, thank them for their time and politely disengage. We can focus on gathering signatures from other members and move on.
    4. Only Circulate the Official Forms for Your Region – Do not alter or circulate your own version of this petition. All forms must be pre-approved by the IBT Office of Election Supervisor and using an altered or unofficial form invalidates all of your hard work. Each region has a specific set of candidates eligible for election in that region. Make sure you circulate the correct version for your region and ask the campaign if you are unsure which is the correct version.
    5. Do Not Forget to Fill Out Bottom Section to Certify Petition as Circulator – A petition will be invalidated if you fail to take this final step. Be sure to share your email and personal cell phone in case we have questions we can contact you.
